In a pivotal development for European football governance, UEFA and FIFPRO Europe have formalized a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Signed during the 2024 Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris, this agreement establishes a new framework for collaboration and significantly enhances player representation at the highest levels of decision-making.

A New Era of Player Representation

FIFPRO Europe, which represents over 35,000 professional footballers across 36 UEFA member nations, will now have a direct voice within UEFA's structures. A key outcome of this partnership is that FIFPRO Europe will gain a seat on the UEFA Executive Committee, initially in an advisory role, starting from May 2025. This ensures that players' perspectives on critical issues are considered alongside those of national associations, leagues, and clubs.

Strategic Priorities: Player Welfare and Women's Football

The agreement places a strong emphasis on two strategic areas. Firstly, player health, safety, and workload are central concerns. Future decisions impacting player employment conditions or match calendars in UEFA competitions will now require extensive dialogue between both organizations. The partnership will also promote joint medical research and awareness campaigns against doping and discrimination.

Secondly, the MoU identifies the growth and sustainability of women's football as a top priority. Both parties are committed to strengthening development programs and implementing minimum standards to build upon the sport's growing momentum.

Statements from Leadership

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin hailed the agreement, stating, "This partnership represents a new era in our relationship with FIFPRO Europe. By inviting them to join the UEFA Executive Committee, we are creating a more inclusive future for the game, one in which the topic of player welfare will be at the forefront."

FIFPRO Europe President David Terrier added, "This agreement is a hugely positive milestone for professional players across Europe. With player representation now anchored at UEFA’s highest level, we are securing a stronger voice for players where it matters most… to advance player welfare and ensure a healthier and more sustainable future for football."

Future Initiatives

To further this collaboration, UEFA will launch the inaugural UEFA Professional Players Advisory Forum next month. This new platform will enable players and their unions to engage directly with UEFA on key topics. This initiative complements the annual UEFA Convention on the Future of European Football, solidifying a governance model where player input is integral.
